detail of the Dempsey-Willard Fight by James Montgomery Flagg; commissioned by Dempsey (on the right) more than 20 years after the 4 July 1919 fight that made him heavyweight champion, the painting hung at his Broadway restaurant from 1944 until it closed thirty years later, when the very large canvas was given to the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. If the artist's name sounds familiar it's because he created finger-pointing Uncle Sam.
