critically disarming

Your rapier-like wit, however, is more than welcome!

A sign like this was prominently displayed on each door of Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. "Hey, M*****F*****! You call that 'andante'?" BANG!

I've been giggling over that one since you posted it.

I have a photo of a sign banning all sorts of things from the Dorothy Chandler in LA - all sorts of things that they have essentially no control over, because so many people have cell phone cameras, and because MP3 recorders and minidisc recorders can be very, very small.

That reminds me of the time I was barred from the Chinese consulate because I had forgotten I had my camera in my satchel. Being a foolish American, I said, "Oh, I wasn't going to take any pictures!" but they still wouldn't allow me in. I had to go back the next day and when I finally got in, without camera, I realized that everyone else in there of course had cellphones with camera and video capabilities. I sensed a certain flaw in their security procedures.

I can understand why groups try to fight the good fight about recording devices etc even if it can seem increasingly like a losing battle. But I was genuinely startled that they had to tell people to leave the guns at home -- I mean, who goes to the symphony packing heat? Of course, there have been plenty of times I've sat next to a talker and wished for a gun. . . .

It turns out, by the way, that there is sort of an explanation, which I included in an entry I'll probably post tomorrow (but I'll go ahead and give it here as well): it's legal to carry concealed weapons in Minnesota, so venues have to let you know if they forbid them. But if they're concealed, how do you know if people are complying?

Um, wow. Is a permit required?

That's a great question, but since it's probably the best for all concerned that I stay far away from handguns, I'm afraid I can't answer it.

I know that feeling!
