a Serpent by Georges Antoine Baudouin, now at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
A friend with a large record collection once played me a recording of a serpent ensemble. He described the sound as "flatulent."
And that's why people have developed more refined modern instruments. . . . Somewhere I have a serpent recording. I will have to dig it up & listen. It does seem as if a serpent should hiss, but given its intestine-like shape that is maybe unlikely.
