It was kind of funny, and I have no idea where it came from, except -- and here's where I get to sound like a caricature of myself -- "I had been reading Tasso before retiring for the evening to my uneasy slumbers. . ." But I woke up who knows when, with the phrase "virtuous women" in my mind, and I started counting syllables, and then I realized it was hours before dawn and I really had plenty of time to hammer out the daily 17. . . .
