Thanks -- I took advantage of the extra day off to pull up the first tomato vines that had obviously done everything they were going to do, and as soon as I smelled the plants . . . well, there was my haiku.
Wow. So do you like the smell of bus exhaust for its memories? I'll stick to tomato vines, since I was mercifully spared summer camp . . . I can't imagine it was the sort of thing I would have enjoyed, at least at the time.
My childhood summer scents are really strong old-fashioned rose perfume, sweet peas (my grandmother grew them along a long fenceline), and geraniums. Even though tomato vines aren't a childhood memory for me, they've been a part of my life since I was about 24, so that almost counts.

ReplyDeleteThis is true for me too. The other scent of childhood summer is bus exhaust because of summer camp . . .
