Haiku 2011/1

soft days fade away
feather-soft snow piles in drifts
melting forgotten

(I'm having some strange computer problems, so I don't know if it's my system or blogger that thinks I'm publishing this yesterday, but this is actually Saturday January 1, 2011.)

one for the new year

from William Wordsworth:

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon,
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers,
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not. -- Great God! I'd rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.

Peace and strength in the new year.

'twas the season 12

deflated Santa on 8th Avenue, New York, December 2009

Haiku 2010/365

bright bouquets lined up
(edges just starting to wilt)
everyone has left

30 December 2010

Haiku 2010/364

sun so clear and cold
light burns your eyes, wind your skin
flags snap overhead

'tis the season 11

'tis the season 7

Night-time Santa on one of the West 40 streets in Manhattan, I think outside a "gentlemen's club" (ho ho ho)

New York City, December 2009

Haiku 2010/360

half-moon hanging low
in a wet and windy sky
rain strips the branches

21 December 2010

19 December 2010

Haiku 2010/353

a flash tears the dark
thunder rumbles somewhere near
waiting for the rain

18 December 2010

Haiku 2010/352

drinking wine with friends
flushed, I find the house too warm
outside, the rain falls

17 December 2010

Haiku 2010/351

gray gauzy curtain
dropped over the glaring sun
by the tactful mists

16 December 2010

Haiku 2010/350

hands thrust in pockets
shaking as in a fever
so long until dawn

15 December 2010

Haiku 2010/349

waking up at night
alone with my alarm and
half-remembered dreams

14 December 2010

Haiku 2010/348

how vulgar the moon!
shining its flashlight into
dark and restful rooms

13 December 2010

Haiku 2010/347

how tasteful the moon!
shining soft silver above
noisy garish streets

12 December 2010

11 December 2010

Haiku 2010/345

little yellow leaves
paving the sidewalk with gold:
a bitch to sweep up

10 December 2010

Haiku 2010/344

noticing the stars
should be enough contentment
but some days it's not

09 December 2010

Haiku 2010/343

a few lights shining
in the mist a car rolls by
a few raindrops fall

briskly passing by:
a flapping black raincoat and
dripping umbrella

Cal Performances drops a hint that its upcoming seasons will be as exciting as this one: from 19-28 October 2012 they will be presenting the West Coast premiere of the celebrated Philip Glass/Robert Wilson collaboration, Einstein on the Beach. More information here.

I thought I shaped you
O garden, but all along
you were shaping me

a branch snaps in the silence
deer look up, startled

why did that man think
today was the day to wear
that acid pink shirt
